“Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God, It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for My holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you went. I will vindicate the holiness of My great name which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when I prove Myself holy in you in their sight.” ( Ezekiel 36:22-23 )
As much as we try, on our own we often miss the mark. God is aware of our inability to change our own spots—just like a leopard, it is impossible on our own. The Lord is very balanced and all encompassing. HE found a way to vindicate His own character and save us at the same time. This mystery is wrapped up in the person Jesus Christ.
Jesus offers the benefits of His perfect life, death and resurrection to all people. (Rom 5:18) This offering meets all of Gods requirements! Jesus gets the justice of God and if we choose Jesus, we get the mercy of God. In both cases, Christ is the conduit that allows the character of God (justice and mercy) to be satisfied.
Ever since Lucifer rebelled against God in heaven, some of His created beings have been misrepresenting Gods character. The plan that the Trinity came up with is radical to say the least. God chose to vindicate His character by working in and through humans—the sole group that has sinned.
According to Ezekiel and many other places in the Bible, God is the one that acted. His actions alone are the righteousness of God. While we were still sinners, Jesus demonstrated His love and gave Himself for us (Rom 5:8-9). God did this for several reasons… He cares, He is compassionate, He doesn’t want us to be lost, He is merciful, He loves us, He sacrifices for others etc. The Bible teaches many wonderful reasons why God gave His only Son. Two reasons I want to focus on are: vindicating Gods character & restoring the image of God in us.
Originally we were created in the image of God (Gen 1:27). Sin robbed people of that privilege and cast doubt on the holy character of God. The life of Jesus showed without a doubt that God is as great as He says He is. But, God wants to go one step further. God will prove that He is kind, giving, loving, thoughtful, generous, patient, balanced, peaceful, good, righteous…, through sincere believing christians (Ezk 36:22-23). God will prove Himself holy in us and people around us will notice it! Wow. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, New Testament writers repeat this principle often (2 Cor 5:21). At the cross, God put all our sin on Jesus, so that by faith ‘we might become the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ!’
God has acted in a strong and deliberate manner at the cross. HE wants to continually act, but now God wants to repeatedly act in and through our lives. It is still the actions of Jesus and the action is done by Jesus, but God wants this action to happen through Christians. What a privilege and responsibility God is giving us… if (by faith) we let Him do this in our daily life.
